A cushy futon that is the right height is everyone’s dream.
However, most futon frames you can find in the market are lower than a regular couch, making it somewhat uncomfortable to watch tv on, hard to get up from a sitting position, or unutilized for other uses in smaller houses.
Add to that the problem of sagging mattress because of use, and you will have a low futon to deal with.
Now, you may be unable to stop the futon mattress from sagging if you continue using it, but you can do something to make it taller and be of good use.
There are two ways to make your futon taller: first is to make the frame higher from the ground, and the second is to improve the height of the mattress.
Read on to find out the different ways of making a futon taller.
Make the frame higher from the ground
Invest in bed risers
The Upside: Bed risers are a great option to bolster the futon frame because they are easy to use. All you have to do is insert the legs inside the holes of each riser.
You can easily buy them at home depots or furniture stores, with prices ranging from $15 (per leg) up to $230 for an entire set. They are also available in plastic, wood, and metal.
Bed risers can increase the height of the futon by two to 12 inches, depending on which riser you will purchase.
The Downside: Bed risers are generic, and the shape and size of the holes may not be identical to that of the leg frame. Make sure to check these things before buying a riser.
Use cinder or concrete blocks
The Upside: They are affordable options for elevating your futon. They are cheap (about $1.25 – $5.0 per leg), and you can buy them from any hardware or Home Depot. These blocks are also sturdy and can easily handle your combined weight and that of the futon.
These blocks can raise your futon by eight inches.
The Downside: Cinder and concrete blocks can deeply scratch your floor if handled poorly.
What’s more, if you are a person who appreciates outstanding aesthetics, these blocks are not for you as they would look hideous and out of place in your house, especially in your living room.
Build extended legs using wood or metal
The Upside: This is an elegant solution to improving the height of your futon frame since you can customize the material and make it look like the original frame. Additionally, high-quality wood and metal are sturdy and can handle greater weight.
The Downside: As with many things, elegance comes at a price. Since you have to buy high-quality wood or metal to extend the legs of your futon frame, expect to spend more than when purchasing blocks or pre-fab risers.
You also have to know the basics of carpentry and be willing to do manual labor since you’d have to measure everything to specifications to ensure the legs are balanced and of the same height, cut the required pieces, and assemble them using power tools or traditional hammers and screwdrivers.
Add height to your futon mattress
Improving the mattress height is the more uncomplicated method between the two. You can:
- Add cushions underneath the mattress
- Use toppers or multiple comforters on top of the futon mattress
- Stack futon mattresses atop each other
